Personal reflection

1. Main concept/New knowledge learnt
I learnt that you could scale things in google sketchup and I learnt how to use inDesign. I also learnt that designing a building is not easy and requires a lot of research.

2. Difficulties encountered
I did not know what to put inside my journal.

3. How did you overcome the difficulties faced
Ms Seah told me what was missing in my journal,

(Random Plaza) Matthew Wong

(Project Name) Random Plaza
(Purpose of the building) It is for people to relax, shop, watch movies etc. There are also some tuition centres and food courts. There is a rooftop park for people who are too lazy to go to a real park.
(Concept behind the design) It is a local mall inspired by the design of a greenhouse. Therefore there are many plants on the roof and also some in the building. The roof is just like a greenhouse roof, except that it is much higher up than usual. The transparent glas roof will also be good for the plants and humans inside as it will be warmer and the air will be fresher.

???

1. Illustrate with examples what would you see in the design of a building that you would consider it to be unique
?
Shape
Location
Layout

2. Illustrate with examples how does colors affect the look and feel of a building (exterior/interior)?
A building with many colours that go well together would look nicer
A building has similar colours as its surroundings would look nicer

3. Illustrate with examples how does lights affect the look and feel of a building (exterior/interior)?
Buildings with colourful lights appear attractive and bigger

4. Illustrate with examples how does texture affect the look and feel of a building (exterior/interior)?
Specific use of a texture can effect the smoothness that a building conveys. For instance, use of rough surfaces can be visually active, whilst smooth surfaces can be visually restful. The use of both can give a sense of personality to a design.

What makes a good architectural design?

Plant layout
  • Simple, straightforward roads: easy movement around
  • Efficient utilisation of space: good use of horizontal and vertical spaces
  • Everything is easily accessible
  • Uni-direction flow: A good layout is one that makes the materials move only in the forward direction, towards stage of completion, without any backtracking.
  • Maximum visibility: A good layout is one that makes men, machines and materials ready observable at all times.

What is architectural design?

1. Source
Concept that focuses on the components or elements of a structure or system and unifies them into a coherent and functional whole, according to a particular approach in achieving the objective under the given constraints or limitations.

2. Source
Architecture design refers to the actual design and layout of spaces. Architecture encompasses many different elements including construction, design, and the manipulation of light as it relates to shadow.

3. Source

  • The art and science of designing and erecting buildings and other physical structures.

  • The practice of an architect, where architecture means to offer or render professional services in connection with the design and construction of a building, or group of buildings and the space within the site surrounding the buildings, that have as their principal purpose human occupancy or use.

  • A general term to describe buildings and other structures.

  • A style and method of design and construction of buildings and other physical structures.
